Why is duct cleaning necessary?

Fire Risk

  • London Fire Brigade sources report that there is a kitchen extract ductwork fire, on average, every 9 days in the Greater London area.

  • Chances of a kitchen duct fire are approximately 1 in 100

To insure a building with all risks covered, the business will typically be required to have:

  • Ductwork cleaned at least annually/6 monthly intervals

  • Filters cleaned weekly

  • System regularly inspected i.e. monthly

Statutory regulations

  • Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO)

  • Replaced previous fire safety laws on certification of premises

  • This reform placed responsibility on individuals in a business/organisation to carry out risk assessment, manage & reduce risk of fire

The responsible person's duties include:

  • Cleaning filters weekly

  • Checking fryer thermostats annually

  • Cleaning ductwork to a specified frequency in its entirety to TR/19 standards by a specialist contractor

  • Not having any part of the extraction system closer than 250mm from combustible structures of the building

  • Storing flammable waste materials in separate metal containers
